AFFA Boosts Logistics Human Resource Competitiveness

October 6, 2022

The ASEAN Federation of Forwarders Associations (AFFA) is encouraging all its members across 10 ASEAN countries to continuously enhance service quality to create a reliable logistics ecosystem.

Chairman of AFFA, Yukki Nugrahawan Hanafi, stated that he consistently supports all AFFA members in focusing on developing human resources (HR) through vocational education and training.

“Logistics, as the lifeblood of the economy, must be managed by competent and modern human resources,” he emphasized on Thursday (6/10). Yukki, who also serves as Chairman of the Indonesian Logistics and Forwarders Association (ALFI), added that ALFI and the ALFI Institute will continue advancing digital-based training programs.

AFFA Executive Director, Suprapto Suwaji, explained that the training materials are up-to-date and harmonized with the curriculum standards of FIATA International in Geneva, the global governing body for logistics service providers. According to him, each AFFA member country has the responsibility to develop and conduct logistics sector training.

“Each association must also register and apply for certification validation with FIATA in Geneva to gain recognition as a provider of internationally standardized vocational training,” he said.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, ALFI and the ALFI Institute, already certified and validated by FIATA Geneva, successfully developed digital-based training for members and collaborated with several higher education institutions in Indonesia. Between 2019 and 2022, a total of 2,077 graduates were produced during the pandemic period, bringing the total number of graduates since 2000 to 6,517, from various programs such as basic logistics, FIATA Diploma, FIATA Higher Diploma in Supply Chain Management, UN-ESCAP programs, Customs Procedures, and IMDG Code training.

Suprapto added that this achievement report was presented at the ASEAN Transport Facilitation Working Group (43rd TFWG) meeting, held from 27–29 September 2022. Combined with in-person practical training, this initiative supports the development of competent HR to advance Indonesia’s logistics industry into a modern, effective, and efficient sector.

Yukki also noted that AFFA has established a vocational education and training body called AFFA Logistics Institute (ALI). Supported by the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC) and the Japanese government through JAIF, ALI has developed curricula and conducted training for 100 trainers sent from each ASEAN member country.
